Recording Piano: A simple way to record your piano playing for Social Media
This is my first video in a short series on how to film yourself playing piano … you can consider this the ‘point and shoot’ approach followed by simple video editing with nothing but the phone in your pocket. I’m a member of a couple of Facebook Piano Groups and the question of Video Recording yourself playing Piano has come up on both of them.
This video will be followed up in the next weeks with some slightly more advanced techniques – yet still things that are easily within the reach of everybody.
Also, one of my favourite YouTube Piano Tutors (Josh Wright) did a video where he says that filming yourself as part of your regular practice is real game changer in terms of making progress fast.
I invite you to download my free eBook series on the topic. I’ve linked Volume 1 here however you’ll also receive an email with your download with links to get Volumes 2 and 3 (also for free).
EQUIPMENT:
Fully details of all equipment used are available on my blog at the address below:
Filmed on an iPhone 8+ – using the Filmic Pro app
Audio captured on an iPhone 6S using a Shure MV88 Microphone

I would like to record me playing on the Aria Piano to post on Youtube. Could you please suggest how I should set up. Thank you, Tommy!
Hello there. Thank you for the excellent tutorial, much appreciated. My main question pertains to how to Video Record piano via and external plug in Mic. Is there a way to set the Audio Input level ie so that there is no possible distortion? (most recorder functions have Auto-Level Recording which as you know can be disastrous for Music as it removes the Dynamic range). Best regards, A
