The Surprising Power of Remote Work | Sam Kern | TEDxHieronymusPark
Sam shares his adventures living abroad and working remotely to emphasize how choosing less possessions, geoarbitrage and a laptop can create a rich and fulfilling life while having the free time to chase curiosities and potential passions. Sam Kern is host and producer of Radically Different – a podcast series that explores lifestyles and career paths that break from the American norm. Since graduating college in 2018, he’s been living in various parts of the world, working remotely from his laptop, and interviewing people living life on their own terms. Sam believes that exposure to “radically different” ways of living not only gives you more choice and power to create the life you want to live, but also leads to a more empathetic and connected world.

Sam was raised in Hamilton, Montana and graduated with a computer science degree from Montana State University. He’s deeply honored and excited to be back in his hometown, sharing his story with the community that raised him. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

  1. We loved it, thanks for sharing!👏

  2. Absolutely agree with that. Since I discovered digital nomads it began my dreAm.
I would do anything to achieve it.

  3. Arno Kemp says:

Not to be unkind to this chap from the "free world" with savings and an American passport – but thousands of us did this already – decades earlier. I did it from 1994 onwards – travelled and worked on four continents – and saw countless cities. Only, the word "digital" didn't exist in the context it does now, nor did we have 1) the desire or 2 )the platforms to share and advertise our existence, curiosities, thoughts, or big screen presentations with the world. We were a select group of proper, accidental global adventurers who worked to travel – we met each other in different cities, back packers, on beaches, in bookshops, bars – no Facebook, no Insta, no mobile devices – and we found our way around by reading a paper map in a book called Let's go Europe or Asia or Africa, and we asked strangers on the street for directions – using a pocket phrase book of the local language. We called home from a phone booth whenever we could find one, or mailed post cards to our families. We didn't need to share our lives with the world or document it – we just lived it.

  4. This is really insightful and shows it's possible to work from remote places.

  5. I was meant to find this.

  6. salanding555 says:

Some well-graduated American kid gave up lucrative job and went to somewhere in Asia and then gave a TED speech talking about "exiting travel-working life". Speaking of being "typical".

  7. Carl Greene says:

  10. Lydia Kan says:

Great talk Sam. Agree – each of us can learn new skills for FREE on Coursera and EDX — and choose to live a life that has value for you. The other side to working and living remotely is breaking down the myth that buying things make people happy. The evidence, science, shows being with others and memory-making experiences are what make us happy.

  11. Ilzite K says:

Now the Ted is brainwashing us and trying to socially engineer perspectives and attitudes…

  18. Anyway it is clear that our present job model does not work at all anymore

  19. Sounds cool

But it might work only for a privileged minority
And based on the existence of inequality between countries

    I respect you
    I respect your challenging choice
But it cannot be for anybody
Somebody has still to work in factories and farms

    Thanks

  20. forisma says:

This is not TED worthy. He didn't say anything new, and I am perplexed that people genuinely don't see any trouble of making use of cheeper countries. Working in rich countries and using your privilege, and living cheaply in poor countries. I mean, sure, lots of people do this. But shame on you to brag about it. Damn, makes me want to puke.
